Car-Free Day is almost here! This community celebration, filled with live music, delicious food, and activities for all ages, will take place on St. Johns Street, between Queens and Moody streets, from 12 noon to 5pm on Sunday, August 17, 2025.

“We’re excited to host Car-Free Day in Port Moody again this year,” says Mayor Meghan Lahti. “This much-loved celebration brings our residents, businesses, artisans, and non-profit organizations together to have fun, learn about all that our community has to offer, and consider how we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by using our vehicles less and choosing to walk, cycle, or take public transit more often. I’d like to thank our 2025 Car-Free Day partner, TransLink, for their participation, as well as the operators of our community booths and all the volunteers who make this event possible. I invite everyone to join us on Sunday, August 17 – we hope to see you on St. Johns Street!”

“Car Free Day is a great reminder that getting around doesn’t have to mean getting behind the wheel,” said Kevin Quinn, CEO of TransLink. “We’re excited to partner with the City of Port Moody to showcase how transit can help people explore their community in a way that’s sustainable, social, and stress-free.”

Car-Free Day will feature:

Food and drink
You’ll find family-friendly seating areas and a variety of food and drink options available from restaurants, cafés, and food trucks, including licensed patios for visitors aged 19+.

Performers
Enjoy live music at two locations: our main stage and our buskers’ tent. At the main stage, join us at 12:45pm for a special ceremony to kick off the celebration, and don’t miss Cookin' with Brass, Etienne Siew, Music with Marnie, and Front Page Band.

Family-friendly activities
Bring the kids! We’ll have a climbing wall, mobile gym, inflatable slide, wacky obstacle course, and carnival sports games.

Community booths
Get to know the people serving your community! There will be approximately 100 booths presented by local businesses, artisans, and non-profit groups.

City of Port Moody booths
Visit us at the City of Port Moody booth. Port Moody kids aged five to 12 years old can apply for a chance to be mayor for a day in November 2025, in celebration of World Children’s Day. Our Recreation team will be hosting a youth lounge, and Port Moody Fire Rescue, Port Moody Public Library, and Port Moody Police will each have a booth. Be sure to stop by!

TransLink buses
The TransLink team will be at Car-Free Day with their outreach and historical buses featuring fun interior décor, games, and transit information.

Here are some important notes about this event:

On-site services
Use on-site signage to locate:

  • portable toilets
  • water bottle filling stations including Metro Vancouver’s Water Wagon (bring your own reuseable bottle)
  • misting stations
  • a dedicated space for feeding infants
  • a sensory friendly space operated by Canucks Autism Network
  • free bike valet brought to you by TransLink and operated by BEST (Better Environmentally Sound Transportation)

Weather preparedness
Dress for the weather as this event will go ahead rain or shine. Use your sun sense if the forecast calls for higher temperatures. Wear a hat, use sunscreen, and drink plenty of water.

Leashed dogs are welcome, and you’ll find water bowls for dogs at our water bottle filling stations. However, if the weather is expected to be very warm, please leave your dog at home. Streets and sidewalks can quickly heat up to unbearable temperatures and can cause severe burns to a pet’s paw pads.

Alternative modes of transportation
There are lots of ways to travel to the celebration: use your own power – go on foot or by bike or hop on a kick scooter or skateboard; choose electric – e-scooter or e-bike; or use public transit.

Check TransLink’s Trip Planner for transit routes and schedules. Vehicle parking, available at Westcoast Express Park and Ride (65 Williams Street), will be extremely limited. If you choose to drive, consider carpooling with friends or neighbours who plan to attend, to reduce the number of cars on the road.

Street closure
Please note that on August 17, 2025, St. Johns Street, between Douglas and Moody streets, will be closed to all vehicle traffic from 6am to 10pm. For more information, please see our traffic management summary. Commuters and residents living in the area are directed to use alternative routes such as Clarke Street. Bus riders can find temporary bus stops on Clarke Street. On-street parking in the neighbourhood will be extremely limited. Expect delays and give yourself extra time to get to your destination.
