Freedom of Information & Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPPA)

The City of Port Moody is subject to the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (the Act), as are all local governments, and most provincial public bodies. The Act ensures that public bodies are accountable and open to the public. This is accomplished through a balance of the public’s right to “Freedom of Information” and “Protection of Privacy”.

The Act is applicable to all records in the custody of the local government, subject to exceptions provided for in the Act. The Act does not replace other procedures for access to information, or limit in any way access to information that is not prohibited from disclosure and is available to the public.

The Act allows the public to request copies of government records and receive them in a timely manner.

The City of Port Moody does not process access to records requests for the following organization:

Port Moody Police Department

To request information from this public body you must contact them directly.

How to Make an Information (FOIPPA) Request
A written formal request is only necessary if the information you seek is not routinely or readily available to the public. Requests for access to records under the Act must be in writing. You may complete a Request for Access to Records form or make your request by letter, fax, or email. Your fax, letter or email request must include your full name, address, and telephone number.

To assist with the processing of the request, make your request as specific and concise as possible. The better we understand your request, the more able we will be to control costs and respond in a timely manner.

FOIPPA Request - Is There a Cost?
'Access to records' requests generate additional expenses for the City. The Act allows public bodies to charge for search time in some cases and to charge for production of copies of the information.

Informal or routine requests for information, on the other hand, are subject to the City’s Fees Bylaw.

Formal FOIPPA Request
There is no charge for your own personal information but all other requests from individuals (non-commercial) are charged $7.50 per quarter hour after the initial three hours of search and retrieval.

For a complete list of fees and charges please see Section 75 Fee Schedule of the Act.
